What is a transaction hash (TXID)?
A transaction ID (TXID) is an identifier used to look up a particular blockchain transaction. Wallets may call it a “transaction hash” or “tx hash.” It is derived from transaction data and provides a reference for finding the record in a block explorer.
Transaction hash vs. wallet address
Example
A wallet address identifies a sending or receiving destination; a TXID identifies the transaction. Two separate transfers to the same address have separate transaction IDs. Searching the address brings up its activity, while searching a TXID opens a particular transaction.
An exchange withdrawal request number is not necessarily a transaction hash. It may be an internal reference for a request that has not reached the network. Keep these fields separate when support asks for the onchain transaction ID.
Does a TXID prove that a payment is complete?
No. On Ethereum, for example, the hash is generated before the transaction enters a block. The record may still be pending or may show a failure. To assess completion, check the correct network, recipient, amount and confirmation or execution status together.
After locating the ID, the TXID transaction-tracking guide explains how to check status, recipient and amount.
A TXID is not a private key and does not grant spending authority on its own. Sharing it can expose the public addresses and amounts associated with the transaction, so consider the privacy implications.
